"At weekends (Fri-Sun). You can't experience a nicer old-style German Christmas than in medieval Bad Wimpfen. The town was granted the privilege of being allowed to hold a fair before Christmas (Katharinenmarkt) by Kaiser Friedrich III as early as 1487. The fascinating centre of the old town, which is under a preservation order, is particularly attractive in the evening with its festively illuminated silhouette. The picturesque half-timbered houses, decorated with a large number of illuminated Christmas trees, form the background for 160 stalls, which mainly offer arts-and-crafts articles for the approaching festivities. The air smells of mulled wine, roasted almonds, candles and fir sprigs. The Christ Child and Santa Claus give children presents. Fair opening hours: Fri 2 p.m. - 9 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sun 11.30 a.m. - 9 p.m.
